China Targets Value of LED Production to Reach 450 billion yuan

China National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Science and Technology have jointly released the LED industry plan. Value of LED lights from China to reach 450 billion yuan.
According to the plan, the value of LED production will reach 450 billion yuan, and about 10 to 15 industry-leading enterprises will be formed with the control of core technology and branding.
LED lighting products to account for 20% of the market
LED Lights from China
By 2015, production of filament lamps over 60W will be eliminated, with the market share expected to drop to 10 percent. Traditional energy saving lamps will account for 70 percent of lighting product market. LED lighting products, on the other hand, will account for 20 percent of the market.
Compared to the traditional lighting products, LED streetlights can save on 30 percent of energy usage, indoor lighting can save on 60 percent energy use, LED backlit products can save 50 percent and LED landscape lighting can save 80 percent of energy used.
By transitioning to LED lighting products, the country can save 60 billion KWH of energy annually, the equivalent of 21 million tons of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 60 million tons.
Nationalization of chips of LED products to reach 80%
The plan also lays out nationalization of chips of LED products reaching 80 percent. Luminous efficiency of core devices will step into the leading position of the world. Production of key equipment and materials will also be nationalized, as well as 70 percent of testing equipment.

A Brief Discussion on LED Packaging Technology

LED is the acronym of Light Emitting Diode. It is a kind of semiconductor device that is commonly used in indicator light and display board. LED is capable of transforming electric energy into light energy directly in high efficiency and its life-span can reach as long as tens of thousands hours to one hundred thousand hours. Compared to traditional bulbs, LED also bears the advantages of non-friable and power-saving and so on.
However, only well-packaged LEDs can be applied as terminal products in practical use. And the packaging types should be designed according to the requirements of each distinct type of LED.
Firstly, we need to figure out why should LEDs be packaged?
Through packaging, outer leads can be linked to the electrode of LED chips, thereby to protect the chips and to improve its luminescence efficiency. More important than the electrical signal output function, packaging makes sure that the diode chips to operate normally and to export visible light successfully. So the packaging is not an easy job as electric parameters and optical parameters requirements should be count on at the same time when doing the design.
Secondly, the packaging equipments will be introduced here.
The requirements for LED packaging are strict. It is essential to use high-precision crystal solid machine to package no matter Lamp-LED or Surface Mount Device LED (SMD-LED). If LED chips were not placed into the package precisely, the luminescence efficiency of the overall packaging device will be influenced directly. Any deviation from the established position will prevent LED light to be reflected fully from the reflective cup, affecting LED’s brightness. So an advanced crystal solid machine with a PR System should be used in order to weld LED chips into the package precisely, without considering the quality of the lead frame.
The latter part of this passage is going to introduce different kinds of LED packages
LEDs applied in different occasions and LEDs with different sizes, heat-dissipation methods and luminescence efficiency will have different types of LED packages. Currently, LED packages can be divided into the following types: Lamp-LED, TOP-LED, Side-LED, SMD-LED, High-Power-LED, Flip Chip-LED and so on.
1. Lamp-LED 
Lamp-LED adopts potting process. Firstly to inject liquid epoxy resin into the LED molding cavity, then to insert LED stent which is well pressed and welded into the liquid, finally to put it into the drying oven to solidify the epoxy resin. LED pared from the cavity will be the final product. As the manufacturing technique for Lamp-LED is comparatively simple and its cost is lower, its market share is comparatively high.
2. SMD-LED SMD-LED is mounted to the surface of the circuit board. SMT (Surface Mount Technology) is usually adopted. This type of LED can use reflow soldering, and problems related to luminance, visual angle, smoothness, reliability and consistency can be well solved in SMD-LED. Meanwhile, lighter PCB and reflector material is used in SMD-LED. What’s more, heavy carbon steel chip pins used in Lamp-LED is removed after improvement, enabling a less amount of epoxy resin to be required in the filling of the display reflector, thus the size and weight of the LED is reduced. Generally, SMD-LED can reduce product’s weight by 50% easily, making terminal application perfectly.
3. Side-LED Currently, one of the focused problems for LED packaging is related to side-emitting. It should be made sure that the side-emitting intensity is the same with that of the surface emitting when LED is used as the backlight source of LCD. Although side-emitting can be realized through the design of a lead frame, its heat dissipation effect is not ideal. Thus the invention of a specially designed reflector by Lumileds Company comes out. Using the reflector’s principle, surface emitting LED can radiate side light, thus high power LED can be applied to large size LCD backlight modules successfully.
4. TOP-LED TOP-LED is a commonly seen surface mount light-emitting diode. It is mainly used as the backlight or status indicator light of multi-functional thin profile handsets and PDA.
5. High-Power-LED In order to get high power, high brightness LED light sources, LED lights manufacturer from China is now making efforts to produce high power LED with proper packages. At present, LED packages that can endure W scale power have been invented, such as Norlux Series high power LED package. It is a multi-chip assembly with a hexagon aluminum base board that functions as heat sink at the same time. Base board’s diameter amounts to 31.75mm. The emitting zone is located in its central part, with diameter of about (0.375×25.4)mm. Forty LED chips can be contained in one package. Generally, the future outlook for high-power-LED package is promising due to its high density chip assembly, high luminescence efficiency, low thermal resistance and high output power under large current flow.
It is obvious that the thermal characteristics of power LED can directly influence its working temperature, luminescence efficiency, wavelength, life-span and other factors. So it is important to focus on the packaging design process, manufacturing technology of power LED chips.
6. Flip Chip-LED There are couple numbers of perforation in the PCB base board in Flip Chip-LED. Every perforation in one side of the base board is set with a kind of conductive material that is spread on the surface of the base board. Then couple numbers of unpackaged LED chips are fixed on the perforations on the side that has conductive material. The anode and the cathode of every single LED chip are connected to the conductive material on the surface of the base board through a tin-ball. Meanwhile, LED chips are adhered with transparent sealing glue that is a hemisphere shape on the side that faces with the perforation.
Conclusion
According to the solid-state lighting principle, the luminescence efficiency of LEDs can reach approximately 100%. So, it is called the new light source in the 21st century, and is possible to become the fourth generation light source after incandescence lamp, fluorescent lamp and high-intensity discharge lamp. In the future, manufacturers should focus on the development of high-power, high brightness LED. As packaging is the process to link the preceding and the following parts in LED industry chain, attentions should be specially paid to it.

The latest LED technology opens up wide areas for new applications, new technical possibilities and reduced costs. The main advantages of the state of the art LED light sources are:
The life time of an LED reaches or frequently exceeds the life time of the application and there are often no special changes necessary. If one defines the failure criteria as end of life when the light intensity of an LED has reached 50% of the initial light intensity, depending on the model, one can calculate numerical life times above 100,000 hours for LED Chips based on GaAs. In the case of GaN – based chips (blue, true green, white) the life time strongly depends on the packaging technology and could be in the range between 7000 hrs and 100,000 hrs.
In the case of colored light the power consumption is below the power consumption of white light sources with filter glass (see table below). White LEDs can now reach the level of fluorescent triphosphor tubes and standard white LEDs show a better efficiency than incandescent or halogen lamps.
The radiant intensity of an LED is controllable in the whole range without any change in the light properties (e.g. dimming of incandescent lamps leads to a shift in color temperature) and any time loss (switching time of LEDs for general lightening < 1 μs). The PWM (pulse width modulation) is the recommended method for the dimming of LEDs. Dimming by reduced DC current may lead to inhomogeneous appearance of LED arrays.
Compared to the high efficient light sources of fluorescent tubes, compact lamps and metal halide high-pressure lamps the switching time of LEDs is very short. This plays an important role especially for applications like head lamps and brake lights in automotive and traffic applications.
LEDs provide excellent stability for mechanical and thermal stress. The reliability of an LED is described by the different failure mechanisms, the spontaneous total failure of the LED and the reduced light intensity of the LED. To calculate the reliability of an LED array one should use the data for spontaneous failure. They should be in the range of 10 ppm/h within the first hour of operation including solder processes and below 0,1 ppm after the first hours of usage.
The light quality of incandescent lamps is excellent (CRI 100%). White LEDs provide color rendering indices between 70% and 85%, better for daylight (6000 K) than for warm white (2900 K) LEDs.
The calculation is based on a price of 0,1 € / kWh. This LED- data has been taken from different data sheets of top suppliers. Due to the diverse applications the costs of maintenance and ownership need to be calculated against the relevant application. The loss of power supplies has not been considered. One key aspect in the application of LEDs as light sources is the management of thermal loss. This problem is new for LED applications, previous typical slogans are “LEDs are low cost, low heat, and have low failure rates”. The LED producers resolved the problem of the thermal resistance between the LED chip and the connecting pad with different solutions like metal core PCB, specially designed lead frames, to based solutions and ceramic-based packages.
Good solution can provide a thermal resistance between p/n junction and solder pads below 20 K/W. The excess heat can be removed by different passive and active ways. The metal core P.C.B. or flexible P.C.B. usually directly mounted on a heat sink or air fan or in specials cases water cooling is used to keep the p/n junction temperature below the critical limit. In addition one should consider that the radiant intensity has a negative temperature coefficient. As an example red LEDs have an TC in the range of -0,5 % / °C and an increase of the p/n junction temperature from room temperature (20°C) up to 85 °C reduces the radiant intensity by 32.5%.
The picture shows a solution for the thermal management of a warm white LED source for a street lamp. The warm white LED modules for this street lamp were developed by OSA Opto Light GmbH, Germany.
1.In this case an LED with a thermal resistance below 10 K / W has been mounted on a metal core PCB. The circuit also includes intelligent temperature protection. The metal core PCB is directly mounted onto a passive cooling system and onto the metal housing of the lamp itself. In operation this system provides in equilibrium a temperature gradient between the p/n- junction and the metal lamp housing below 50°C.

The thermal management of an incandescent filament or tungsten halogen lamp is designed on the fact, that the thermal radiation is the way to remove the heat from the lamp. Thus the thermal conductivity of the socket is very low. A replacement process has to ensure that the LED is protected from high temperature.
The power supplies of most conventional lamps are constant voltage sources, typical between 6V / 12V and 220V. LEDs require constant current sources and have a forward voltage between 1.5 V (IRED) and 4 V Power supply. A very common way is a current limitation resistor or a constant current source with bipolar transistor. The power consumption at the resistor determines the total power consumption and not the LED itself. In the case of a 24 V System the power consumption of a red LED sign (UF = 2 V, I= 30 mA, P=60 mW) is 720 mW. State of the art power step down converters are a way to solve this (also thermal) problem.
Conventional white light sources are used for colored signs and indicators in combination with a filter glass. Often the phantom effect of the filter glass is desired. The replacement should consider the absorption of the LED emitted light carefully.
Conventional light sources are compared with high end white, blue and green LED chips insensitive to ESD / short high voltages. The whole unit (often the LED itself) has to provide adequate protection.
Especially yellow and 565 - 570 nm green LEDs show a visible shift of the dominant wavelength over the required temperature range. An easy but expensive way to resolve this problem is to combine a white LED with a color filter.
Considering all the aspects shown above, the direct replacement of conventional lamps is an interesting way to increase the reliability of systems and to reduce the real costs of ownership. The state of the art LEDs show clear advantages for all applications, where colored light sources are necessary. In near future we will see white LED light sources with further cost benefits and increased external efficiency, which will again show clear advantages over conventional light sources.
